Dr. Francis L. de los Reyes III, CEAT BS Agricultural Engineering alumnus (’90), visited CEAT to share his life insights to 150 audience on 10 November 2022 at CEAT Lecture Hall and via Zoom.
In his lecture, he gave insights that students can use in their careers: 1) Be so good they can’t ignore you – a. Don’t start with your “follow your passion”, b. First, get the skills. Fundamental first, c. Be comfortable with being different, d. Be comfortable with failure; 2) Exciting things happen at the interface; 3) Aim for autonomy- the freedom to choose what to work on; and 4) to have a purpose beyond yourself.
Dr. de los Reyes is a Professor of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering, Associate Faculty of Microbiology, and Training Faculty of Biotechnology at North Carolina State University. In 2013, he was named a University Faculty Scholar. He teaches undergraduate and graduate classes on wastewater treatment plant design, environmental biotechnology and microbiology, fundamentals of environmental engineering, and water and sanitation for developing countries. He is also a TED Fellow, a WEF (Water Environment Federation) Fellow, and Board Certified Environmental Engineer by Eminence by the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists.
He was awarded the 2022 UPAA Distinguished Alumnus Award in Science and Technology (Environment- Waste and Water Management and Sanitation). In the upcoming 75th UP Alumni Engineers Homecoming, Dr. Francis will be given the recognition as Global Achievement Awardee in the field of Enviromental Engineering.
